Half dollars by year and facility

Every half dollar production figure we could trace to the U.S. Mint, 1900 to 2011, with the years the sources don't cover marked as such. Each row names its source.

“From 1916 to 1947, the Mint produced the “Walking Liberty” half dollar designed by Adolph A. Weinman.” (U.S. Mint) “In 1948, an image of Benjamin Franklin replaced Liberty on the obverse of the half dollar. The reverse depicted the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.” (U.S. Mint) “In 1971, the Mint removed silver from the half dollar and the composition became copper-nickel clad.” (U.S. Mint) For 1915 to 1954 the Mint's yearly totals include commemorative half dollars; our table takes them out and says how many in each row.

Designs

Year by year

Columns are production facilities. Where every coin in a column carries the same mark, the mark is under the heading; otherwise it's beside each figure. “Mark not stated” means the Mint's report gives the facility but not the mark. A dash means no figure from that facility within what the row's source covers, and each row with a dash says what that is: for 1900 to 1963 the Mint's record counts every coin struck, so a dash means none; later sources cover circulation coins only, so a dash there doesn't rule out proof or collector coins from that facility. Shaded rows combine more than one design.

1980–1998Not published in the sources we checked. No calendar-year or dated counts in the sources we checked. The annual reports we could read for fiscal 1982 to 1988, 1990 and 1992 count coins manufactured by fiscal year, not by calendar year or date, so their figures can't be matched to the date on a coin; the text of the fiscal 1997 and 1999 reports has no calendar-year coin table either. The other reports for these years were image-only scans we didn't transcribe, or failed to download.
