1965: clad coins, and no mint marks

The Coinage Act of 1965 took silver out of the dime and quarter, cut the half dollar to 40% silver, and stopped mint marks on standard circulating coins.

“So, no mint marks appeared on circulating coins from 1965 to 1967.”

“Coins bearing the 1965 date were manufactured from Aug. 1965 through July 1966, inclusive. Beginning on Aug. 1, 1966, the first coins to bear the date "1966" will be manufactured.”

“Includes 368,553,750 coins of regular issue, and 11,800,000 coins in 2,360,000 special Mint sets.”

“In 1965, the Mint removed silver from the dime and the composition became copper-nickel clad.”

“The average silver content is 40 percent of the standard gross weight, or 4.6 grams of silver.”
