By design
The Mint's production pages list each design separately: circulating production at Denver and Philadelphia, without proof or collector coins. This is a different count from the calendar-year table above.
The calendar-year totals and the per-design figures don't match for every year. The year-by-mint table gives each year's circulating production from the Mint's annual production pages; the by-design table gives the Mint's program figures for each design. Calendar-year total minus the sum of that year's designs: 2006 Denver: +12,200,000; 2007 Denver: +59,200,000; 2007 Philadelphia: +25,000,000; 2008 Denver: +66,000,000; 2008 Philadelphia: +34,600,000. One pattern stands out: Denver's 2008 calendar-year figure is 66,000,000 more than its 2008 state designs add up to, and its 2009 D.C. and territories designs add up to the same 66,000,000 more than its 2009 calendar-year figure. The pages don't say why. The Mint attached this note to a later program page (2012 America the Beautiful quarters): “America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program production total may not match the total in the Coin Production page. The latter includes production numbers for partial as well as completed quarter programs as of the end of the period being reported.” (U.S. Mint) The 50 State Quarters pages we cite carry no such note, so we show both counts as published and adjust neither.
Where the mint mark is
“When mint marks returned in 1968, they were placed on the obverse, after having previously been on the reverse of coins.” (U.S. Mint)
